Kevin had asked about where I live in New Orleans. I live in Jefferson parish. Orleans parish and Jefferson parish are currently under martial law. I do not know when Orleans parish residents might be able to return, but the Jefferson parish president says we can return on Monday to pick up “a few precious things” and then leave until power and water are restored. That could take a week or a month, we’re not sure, yet. I have insider information that Harahan and River Ridge (the area in Jefferson where I live) managed to escape with no flooding. My parent’s house appears to have not [yet] sustained any structural damage or flooding. We were very lucky. I have heard that there are yet more levee breaches, but I haven’t yet verified this rumor. Provided the water level doesn’t continue to rise, we should return home to functional housing. We have been very fortunate in this tragedy. I have many things to attend to, but I will try to post any updates.

Oh! We found a baby squirrel in the storm and we’re feeding it out of a medicine dropper. We alternate between calling him Rocky and just Squirrel. We’re afraid he might be very sick and have internal injuries, but he’s survived two nights of our TLC, so we’re hopeful.

Daniel again…

No, to answer your question, I am in touch with Mary via cell phone. She and her fam are safe in LA., I’m just acting a her internet access monkey. I hope she doesn’t read that. ;)

Mary wanted me to tell all that she lives in Jefferson Parish. Perhaps someone was looking for that bit of info?

This is Daniel, posting on Mary’s behalf via staticky cell phone. Mary’s home is located just west of NO and north of the River near Metairie. They are doing fine, going a little stir, they all want to go home, but she doesn’t know when she will be able to. She will post pics when she can, preferably from a dry place with electricity.

Katrina Looms Saturday, Aug 27 2005

I have rather cleverly avoided potentially evacuating New Orleans, should there be such a need. Before I ever heard the name Katrina, back before she was a Tropical Storm, I decided to spend this weekend in Baton Rouge to visit old friends and sneak in some quiet reading time. So, if anybody is keeping up on the weather and concerned about me escaping my bedroom in a pirogue, rest assured that I am safe on dry land and might even travel further inland before the weekend is done, should the storm provide me the opportunity to take a day off at my aunt’s camp. :)

As for the old friends, I stayed out far too late last night celebrating the birthday of an old college friend. While there, I ran into two other friends enjoying the same excuse to go out. I didn’t even know some of these people knew each other! Next time, I’ll buy a digital camera so I can post pictures of the fun. This afternoon, I shall enjoy the company of a female *shock* friend for lunch and maybe even some *faint* shopping afterwards.

Clarifications and Updates Monday, Aug 22 2005

The email got lost, work blocks MSN, my phone died a most horrid death and I’m in desperate need of a machine to replace the one slowly dying of heat stroke. I think the A/C is broken again. If I disappear again, it’s because the machine didn’t survive this outage. I can be reached at my gmail account, which I can sometimes manage to check at work. First.Last@you know the rest.

Today, I went on the mad quest for an 8 pack of regular size Crayola crayons. School requires 5 packs! I went to four stores before I decided to get on the Crayola website and track down a store that actually intended to carry them so I could call and see if they had any in stock. They had 4. Mine!!! All mine!!! Now, I just need one more and two composition books and Zeph has all his school supplies. It’s like a prolonged scavanger hunt…

It Only Took A Month Sunday, Aug 21 2005

I suspect I would’ve found it easier to log into my account if I had actually known my username and password. Jeff is supposed to send that to me, along with the overview of all the nifty features this thing has, but he seems too busy. Many thanks to Omer and Nathan for getting me that info without Jeff’s help. :)

I’ve had so many things I’ve been wanting to say that now that I get to sit down and say it, I’m not sure where to begin. I suppose I shall share a brief summary of the highlights of the past month. Rain, rain, rain. Heat. Broken A/C. Broken computer. A/C restored (after three days). Machine restored (well enough). Rain.

My last weekend in Dallas, Zeph attended a pool party for one of my cousins’ birthday. I was informed of this event in the same sentence in which I learned that he showed off his 1337 water skillZ by jumping off the diving board into the 9 foot deep end of the pool. To this information, my reaction was mixed: “Wow, I’m so proud! I want to see that! Wait!? Who thought it was a good idea to let him do that in the first place!?” Due to the abundance of my young cousins, I enjoyed the pleasure of watching him flip off that very same diving board this afternoon at yet another birthday party. My son appears to be part fish.

Life continues… I promise not to let a month pass by before I post again.
